BTW…its interesting that the sexy term for a tooth being pulled is “extraction.” In the military, we always thought of an extraction point as a place where we meet up during a mission and get out of the way. Anyway I guess “Extraction” sure sounds better than “ripping out a f*cking bone out your mouth” so I guess extraction does sort of soften the idea of whats about to happen…

Anyway so I get off work and I head to the dentist office. Now I’ve had teeth “extracted” before so I know about the weird tasting numbing application on the enlarged tooth pick. Sitting in that char that reclines. That air hose thing (I’m using very fancy dental terms now huh?) that blows air on your teeth and gums to bother you even more. I also know about the shot. So nothing was out of the ordinary…I just was surprised how quickly the procedure really was. It was probably 3-4 minutes tops. It took more time to numb me up, or about 20 minutes to fill out the dental insurance information so it was sort of a let down that it lasted so quickly. maybe I’ve amped myself up more than what I remember these were like. I don’t know…either way…I was able to get the tooth out and after a few days I’ll be back on the grind trying to sell these Orange County Streetwear T-Shirts to the masses…

So you are probably wondering why we’ve been the 2013 hide and seek champion the last few months on here by not publishing articles and such huh?

Where the hell have we been?

So if you haven’t noticed we haven’t been posting up articles as much as we wanted to starting off this new years plan of attack we posted. Our goal was to try to publish one article a week about whatever subject matter came across our little craniums.

I wish I had a really good reason why, but if we’re going to be honest a portion of the time was just us lacking the motivation to get the hell to work and start cranking out these articles for you guys!! But there were some things that we couldn’t control though too…I’ll get into those in a moment…

the names not barry but you get the idea...

So besides being lazy there were a few other things that were happening too. First and foremost, I have a day job. Its a 40 hour a week job so a good portion of my time now is covering that job. Hey a man’s got to eat and we’re not making enough on the merchandise sales so that I could leave that job yet and focus primarily on 2 Selfish Media so schedule can be a factor.

Yeah how feel at work some times...

So that eats up a good portion of my time. Another thing is that if you’ve been following me over the last few months you would know that I had a little bit of a hospital stay and it wasn’t for anything like the flu or anything. I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis which is when the large intestine decided to form small pockets in the tissue and where food and other matter can get caught and cause an infection. That’s what happen to me…and what fun that was let me tell you…it happend the same week we were were having our 1 year anniversary celebration. Well I didn’t even get to go to my own party because of this little hospital stay. I was so pissed…anyway the show went on though probably not as successful had I been there but that’s another article entirely…I’m just glad all they did was pump me full of antibiotics and made me rest because it was very serious infection they might have to perform surgery and remove part of my large intestine (that would’ve been lovely). So after that it was recovery and such…

This is what I have...still do but a better diet and more fiber should prevent other attacks...

Anyway, on top of that getting into a fun relationship and hanging out with friends also eats up a lot of good time to be productive on the business. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing but I’m sure if I wasn’t having so much fun hanging with them I would be able to give more time to the business. I loved every minute with those great friends of mine and I will continue to hang with them as well!!

But the icing on the cake happened a few weeks ago…I got chewed out by my boss. Now I’ve been chewed out by supervisors before…heck I’ve had general officers when i was in the military talk to me about some issues. But never in my 8 years in the Military talking to some of the greatest people in the world to work for have I ever felt more small than when my current boss talked down to me like I was some little kid. In my opinion it demonstrated his lack of being an effective leader just as much as me being a follower not meeting his standards. In the Air Force we were used to getting feedback all the time. We’d get 3 formal feedback sessions, an initial, and mid term, and annual. I was about to get to my 6 month point so I started asking “how I was doing to another quasi supervisor of mine” and I got nothing but good praise. The Next day, I’m getting scolded by my boss for not completing a number of assignments. Its one thing to tell me that I’m not meeting standards its entirely different when you cussing and swearing at me threatening my job in a matter where if I respond all its going to do is fuel the fire. All I could do is use my military bearing and let him rant and rave on…I guess i did get my feedback the I finally needed. I’ve spent the rest of the time since just plugging away at the tasks I have. Remain professional with my boss and making sure I complete the assignments he gives as quickly as I can.

Again, I’ve been chewed out before but never talked down too like that. In my military career…they tell you, “you’re not meeting standards” and the boss more than likely gives you a plan of attack/expectations you have to meet. So you understand your game plan. I didn’t get any of that. All I got out of it is that everything he assigns me is an emergency and I need to knock it out as quickly as I can. So after a few days of working at that level and coming home. I kept looking at my laptop and telling myself I need to really get back on the article writing and taking photos and pushing my clothing line cause no one else is going to do it for me and if I’m eventually going to be my own boss I need to get that rolling. So I feel like I’m re-motivated to try to get 2 Selfish Media and 2 Selfish Clothing off the ground finally. So that’s where we are at the moment…So this article is the first of hopefully many to start coming out so that we can start building our audience.

The Tough Mudder is a long grueling obstacle course that covers 10-12 miles at each event and has as many as 30 obstacles you have to try to conquer. However, this article won’t be an obstacle by obstacle review. We want to just hit the highlights and our low points as well (its a grueling event you’re going to be bipolar during the event)

So for starters…we were extremely happy that one of our 2S Girls did the event with us.

So the anticipation of getting to the Tough Mudder start line is there and we just wanted to get started but like any good show they have a man with a microphone hyping up the crowd before the start of the event. That was fun, they paid tribute to all veterans and currently serving military members, and they played the national anthem so those were definitely a highlight for us.

After that we were on our way. Like we said we’re not going to bog you down with every obstacle. we’re going to focus on the ones you really want to know.

Okay, the first “crazy” obstacle you get to is probably the “Arctic Enema.” This is where you, through no fault other than your own, or 2S Girl Claudia as we like to blame, decide to jump into a large chest deep dumpter full, and we mean completely full, of Ice and Water and dive under a log and come out the other end…

It looks like this when your on the edge trying to convince yourself to jump in:

Jumping into the tank we did, you didn’t just have ice floating at the top. You could feel the ice cubes hitting you all the way down your ankles. It was like diving into a cooler trying to get that cold beer at the bottom.

So you jump in and you have to go under that board and most people look like this now:

It literally takes your breath away. And as far as your “Frank and Beans” are concerned? Forget about it…we were talking in about 9 octaves higher than normal and we had a serious frighten turtle scenario if you know what we are referring to. For the next 5 minutes afterwards, we couldn’t be biologically classified as male. That sh*t was cold. What was worst is that the guy in front of us stalled getting out so we had to wait probably an extra 10-20 seconds which in our head felt like 30 minutes at the time. We flop out cause our ability to use our legs has gone from us. And we proceed to get our legs moving again. On a scale of 0-10, 0 being the worst and 10 being awesome. We would give that obstacle an -40 below.

After that a number of more obstacles, and then we start doing the muddy mile. Its a series of mud hills that you have to climb up and go down. Sounds easy right. Holy crap that was slippery and the smell will be something we will never forget. There are parts where random strangers are helping people get over by reaching out and grabbing their hands or sticking there legs out. After you got up you slid down to the next mud hole and you did that about four times…

Sliding down one muddy hill into another muddy pond...so much fun...

We actually enjoyed this obstacle, there was no way to stay clean and you had to get help to get over a couple of those hills. On a scale from 0-10, We give this one an 8. We really had fun with this obstacle.

After about another 4 miles and a number of other obstacles you get to the Dark Lightning obstacle. This is the first of 3 three electrocution style obstacles…We get there and our 2S Girl has gotten through it already and is waiting for us. (yes Claudia is faster than me, but the tough mudder is not a race anyway) Anyway this obstacle you crawl as low as you can through a tunnel that is completely black but they have wires dangling and if you make a connection with the wire 10K volts says hello to you. Anyway, putting our head down completely in the dirt and we start crawling forward until we hit someone’s feet. The trick here is not to stay in contact with them cause when they hit the wire the whole human change feels it…we got zapped about 8 times cause someone else hit the wire and we were in the human chain. Don’t get me wrong we got zapped on own own too. Mostly in the back, but lets just say I had a studder and my ability to do algebra suffered a bit. So we finally get out of the obstacle and its time to keep moving by this point we are on mile 8 and it just doesn’t seem to end.

Now time for a low point, the cramping and the true mental battle for me begins. We just kept putting one foot in front of the other. For some reason we kept thinking of the movie Finding Nemo when Dora is telling Nemo’s dad to just keep swimming, just keep swimming…

What I kept repeating to myself at around mile 8.

What’s funny is that actually helped me get through that first of many mental challenges that day. On a funny note at another point, we heard another competitor say to another one “Just keep swimming!!!” That made me smile (for about 2 seconds until we had a steep hill to climb again)

This next obstacle was probably the highlight of Claudia’s day. It was called the cliff hanger. It was a very steep hill that you could run up almost to the top before it got too steep. I arrive and Claudia is making her first attempt to get up to the top. There are about 5 guys already at the top and they are reaching out their hands and feet, practically doing a human chain to reach her but they couldn’t. I run up to try to give her a boost but neither she nor I have the strength at this point. I had an advantage in height and was able to reach the guys arms pretty easily and get pulled up. Claudia took a couple of tries and even the guys told her to move down where it was easier. Well this feisty little Latina wasn’t having any of that sh*t. She charged ahead and and took a massive leap and was able to grab one of the guys hands and they were able to pull her up. The whole crowd around the obstacle erupted in hooting an hollering for Claudia. She was giving numerous high fives and and she had the biggest smile on her face. I was so proud of her for not giving up. YOU GO SMALLS!!!

After that a few more miles and many more mental and physical battles with other obstacles and we get to probably the last obstacle worth noting…Walk the plank…after 11 miles of endless hills and 20 or so obstacles prior you now get to the point where you climb up to the top of a 15 foot structure and you have to leap off of it. Now you may think its easy but after going through what you have just went through and looking down at 15 feet and I don’t have a fear of heights but you definitely start second guessing yourself for a moment. After a quick, argument with myself…I took a leap…now I’m not sure how many of you have ever jumped off that high of a platform before but you know its pretty high when you have time to think of something like “did I leave the oven on at the house, oh good no I didn’t oh hello water…Splash” Lets just say it was high. Also what tripped me out to was when I hit the water I didn’t reach the bottom either so I couldn’t just bolt myself up to get back to the air. Did I mention the Water was cold too? So You fight to start getting back to the top of the water to get that first breath. And boom you get there and now you have to swim about 50 feet to the other end. Keep in mind you just ran 11 miles, did about 22 very tough obstacles and now you have to jump and swim. Its crazy where they put this obstacle…

After that its a couple more obstacles like the everest wall and the last of the 3 electro shock.

Probably the best feeling in the world was crossing the finish line. By that time, Claudia and I both were pretty beat up. We were all bruised and battered, and cramping up. Both of us had pain in every joint of our legs. We cross the finish line together and they throw on those orange ugly head bands but at that point when we saw them we were nothing but smiles and I thought it was the prettiest thing ever. we cross the finish and they throw around us a couple of those foil space blankets and we get our free beer and t-shirt.

Overall, it was day that reminded me that when we think we have limits you can go a little bit further than you think. We were smoked, but probably the worst part about the whole day was the walk back to the car…it was about a half mile walk and we both were feeling it. But as we write this article on my laptop in my bed…it shows that we even survived that obstacle too. Granted the day or two afterward I felt like I was 90 year old man and Claudia described herself as a “wounded penguin” we were both extremely glad we did the event. If we choose to do it again we hope others will join us…

Would we do this event again…ask us in a couple of days after we heal up and we’ll probably tell you “let’s do it!!!”

It completely zapped just about all my energy. Simple things like going up stairs became an almost impossible task.

Every time I walked up to my room in my house when I'm sick with the flu

Anyway, the exhaustion and clearly having a fever (and no the only cure for this fever wasn’t more cowbell) was to go see the doctor.

I'm sure if I saw this TV Doctor I would've had lupis or something

So I get an appointment for later on that Saturday…I get to the clinic and unlike a military hospital its not busy at all. I’m so used to going to the Emergency room and wasting the whole day there being around other sick people. It probably helped I was able to get an appointment. There was literally one other person in the waiting room ahead of me. Which is good cause I was so out of it and grumpy on Saturday that I wouldn’t have thought twice about striking an infant in the face.

When I'm sick, I get grumpy...I would never harm a child but you get the idea how grumpy I am when I get sick.

Anyway, I get seen by the nurse they take my blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. Everything is good except my Temperature is a little high, that explains the cold feeling and the severe body aches I was having. Anyway she puts me into the exam room. This is part I hate cause you never know when the doctor is coming in to see you. I don’t remember ever seeing a clock in the room either. So you sit on that exam table with that piece of crinkly hospital paper under you waiting to be seen. Keep in mind it didn’t seem that busy. There I was sitting there just wrapped up in a hoodie and all on probably one of the warmest days of 2013 so far and I’m freezing and uncomfortable.

So My Doctor walks in…

I swear my doctor looked like an older version of Weird Al...LOL!!!

Anyway, he sits down and we talk for a minute, he gives me a half ass examination. I don’t think he really wanted to touch me cause he probably was going to get sick too. He doesn’t give me any prescriptions for cold medicine or anything. So he just tells me get some rest and he gives me a No Work Note for a few days.

So the trip to the doctors overall was pretty much just a way to confirm that I do have the flu and so it could give me a few days off from work to get the rest I need so I can recover properly.

So now my goal is to try to avoid getting my roommates sick and such. Anyway, this is what I’ve been dealing with. I don’t wish this on my own worst enemies to get sick with the flu but man this really sucks. At least today, my fever is gone, my energy is starting to return, but I still need a few more days before I feel like I could go out and be around people. And the urge to punch babies in their faces isn’t there anymore.

“See officer, wat had happend wuz…”,

Growing up in a military (Air Force specifically) family we moved around quite a bit. Every few years it was time to move to a new state, a new city, or just a new house. It seemed like until I got into high school, we were always moving. Not sure if you can relate being the new kid at the school but lets just say it was pretty normal for us.

All I had, during school time, was my brother who was a year and half older than me and in a different grade, so he wasn’t always going to be around.

So as the product of the military system, the children of the military families were often used in a way to promote diversity in the schools. My Father was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, which is just located outside of Washington DC. Anyway, so when it came to school we weren’t sent to a school right outside of the base. No, of course not, that would be too easy and involve common sense. So the public school system set up forced busing and we were sent to inner city school.

Okay my school wasn't that bad but I had to keep my guard up regardless...the outside area around the school was pretty bad though...

When I’m talking inner city school I’m literally talking that I represented half the white population and my brother was the other half, with the rest of the school population being black. I do remember a few murders happening just outside of the school grounds…most of the time the cops were involved. Luckily I never got into any fights or were beat up then but it could’ve happened for no reason.

So like any new kids at any school you have to try to find common ground in order to make conversation and develop friendship. My brother being the athlete seemed to adjust easier made friends and was able to do what he normally did (well to me anyway). On the other hand, I had a more difficult time adjusting. I loved science and math, and damn proud to be a nerd too, so the nerd in me at the time didn’t adjust as quickly.

Yeah pretty much me...except I've never had to wear glasses in my life..

I soon found myself under constant pressure to not be “so white” however this was all happening in the late 80s and early 90s. One thing I noticed during this time was the music we were surrounded by was just awesome. I loved the heavy bass beats and the rhymes by the Emcees being able to tell a whole story through their lyrics and I was able to understand. Artists like Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Heavy D and the Boys, LL Cool J, KRS-One, and Lords of the Underground (to just name a few) all just brought something that I fell in love with.

Tupac Shakur at that age really hit me with his beats and his range and story telling in his songs...

That was my “in” to make friends. Granted I still had to get over the racism even at that age but I still loved the music. So as years went by started loving everything about hip hop/rap. Loved Erick Sermon, Redman, DJ Quick, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and others just helped me get through those years in school.

Who remembers Erick Sermon?

Well after years of going to that school it was time to move again. Now this time we were going into the country. Down in Southern Maryland area where the primary music genre was Country Music. Now you can imagine it was a bit of a culture shock for us where we were going to a concrete jungle and now we were back to riding with mostly white kids on the bus and the school was surrounded by corn and tobacco fields. However, Leaving that Downtown DC area didn’t stop me from loving hip hop still. We loved what we hearing then, Wreck N Effect, Yo MTV Raps was still happening on MTV and the hosts Ed Lover and the Fat Dr. Dre was killing it and kept my fix of hip hop news and new artists.

How many of you hip hop heads even remember this TV show on MTV?

So as the years went on and my parents and other people were trying to force Country Music down my throat I rebelled and kept going back to my hip hop. Or as my mother called it “Rap Crap.” I watched as the media tried to make the East Coast/West Coast rivalry bigger than what it really was and trying to commercialized it. Tupac going to prison, Tupac Getting shot the first time, biggie and puff daddy (when he went by puff daddy) doing their thing in music videos, watched the rise in southern hip hop like Outkast, Lil Jon, Juvenile, Mystikal before he went to prison for like 10 years, Nelly showing us the mid west could do hip hop too. Again, hip hop became mainstream and I loved watching become what it did. Granted still not a really a fan of Lil Wayne, but watching Eminem almost come out of nowhere with Dr Dre’s (skinny one) support and watch him explode on to the scene.

So here I am sitting here still with more love toward hip hop than any other genre of music. I don’t see that changing anytime soon either…sorry drum and bassheads…I think I’m a hip hop kid for life but I do appreciate drum and bass more each day.

Halley's Comet passing by Earth in the 80s

Alright so we’re a bit off track now, (what else is new with 2 Selfish Media right?) , now we’re thinking we’re going to be in our eighties when Haley’s comet comes back to earth , lets get steered back in the right direction here. We wanted to share some things with you all and our current plan for this very young 2013.

(NO PARTICULAR ORDER)

First off, we are still going to press with covering events and such. Whether the vendor wants film or video will be up to them but we still want to get 2 Selfish Media’s name out there to the masses. The more people that know about us the more opportunity there is to grow.

Second, (on a side note this article sounds like a new years resolution article for us, well in a way it is so bite us if you don’t like it) our goal is to publish an article a week on a variety of topics. We will try to keep it on local Orange County Hip Hop but if we feel like writing about something else you’re gonna have to deal with it. We are excited about this particular project because it will keep 2 Selfish Media engaged, we can do some fun articles to support those that are supporting 2 Selfish Media, such as specific artists, promoters, venues, and such. If we want to give a performance review, an interview/spotlight a specific artist that week so be it. We’ll include pictures of the artists and links on how to listen to their stuff as well.

Subventure a local Dubstep/Drum and Bass Artist

Third, is to finally get the Cypher Video Series up and going. We know we are slacking hard on that but when you are limited on resources you have to figure out how to execute the budget properly to get the most bang for our buck. But we will make this happen, we may have lost a few artist that agreed to it but we’ll see when if comes down to it.

fourth, we want to launch at the start, at least one video project a month. This just helps improve our craft as film makers as well as get our name out there in streaming media.

fifth, we need to really launch our clothing line and promote the hell out of it…its a major revenue stream for us and it helps us get the things we need/want to help improve our other projects and equipment. If this means getting booths at swap meets to sell our shirts so be it.

Sixth, we want to host an event at least once a month that promotes our 2 Selfish Media brand. We are excited for this one, we may bring in other promoters with this project but overall we are excited to see.

Seventh, Celebrating our first anniversary of existence is a MUST!!! We officially became a company in the Middle of march so we want to throw an event. Honestly we would love for it to be a profitable event but if we break even then I know we did well to thank you guys for supporting us. More to follow on that.

Eigth, is to launch our series of Pin Up shoots. We have already received a number of models interested in working with us. We are just trying to knock out the details and if we can plan it right we might be able to launch a calendar for purchase for 2014. It helps the models and helps 2 Selfish media too. More to follow on this one that’s for sure.

Well that’s what we have in our head, we are hopped up on cold medicine right now so we’re sure there is more but that will just have to wait.

Upgrade, is an event where a number of Heavy Bass/Dubstep artists, our guess is that they are mostly local, show up to the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa and show off the epic bass drops that they have in there sets.

So, this was our first Upgrade event. The host/promoter of Upgrade is man that goes by Werd, he’s real name is Drew but I guess writing your name backwards is cooler. Now Werd is not only a promoter but he’s an MC in the Heavy Bass Community and actually grabs the mic during certain songs and raps over these difficult beats and bass lines. MCs at these events when they are rapping over the beats look and sound like they are speaking in tongues. They are speaking really fast and almost sound like they are repeating some satanic chant or something. We have no idea what they are saying but they are going with the music so it sounds pretty awesome acutally.

So we get to the Upgrade event a little early, what can we say, we like to grab a quick drink before we begin, and there really isn’t anyone there yet. Werd met us at the door and shows us a around the venue. The venue is a sports bar/restaurant any other time of day but today the dance floor was ready to go and the stage already had an artist doing his thing. We always wonder how artists feel when they are performing and really no one is there yet. Again people have to start somewhere right? So at least they are performing and given the opportunity.

As mentioned before, there really wasn’t anyone there yet so we hung out at the bar and talked to Werd when he came by. We asked him some questions like how he got into this scene and such. He mentioned it was his life’s calling, and that god came down from heaven one night to speak to him when he was 16 and told him to pursue this endeavor of music with so much bass that it could cause a pace maker to stop!! Okay, we’re exaggerating here but wouldn’t have that made for a cool/cult following story?

Okay so Werd told us that he used to love going to raves and house parties. He loved those scenes but as he got older he felt like he could play a bigger part in them so he started djing these events. After that he got tired of having to clean up his own house the next day so he started hosting the events at bars and other venues and the rest were history. And just like that, Werd is now the promoter of Upgrade. We didn’t ask him how he came up with the name Upgrade for his Tuesday event…I guess We’ll have to ask him next time.

So as we are sitting there waiting for some photo opportunities to happen eventually and almost like the bass was calling them, people started showing up. All in small groups, it was a total field of dreams sort of feeling “If you have a bass drop, they will come.” So before you know it the place has about 60 people at Upgrade and now its time to start taking pictures.

This is sort of surprising to me this sort of turnout for a Tuesday night. Most people in Southern California are at Taco Tuesday Events or at home cause people got to work. But then we remember that this location is very close to Newport Beach and a lot of people live near by. So I’m sure a number of people just walked over.

So lets talk the actual music, now we are no dubstep/heavy bass expert but we are fans of most music. So we weren’t sure if it would all sound the same to us or not. But to our surprise and our enjoyment it actually doesn’t all sound the same. The DJ’s are able to change the beats and the bass rips in such away that you know that they are playing a different song. Now as a fan of hip hop, we’re not going to lie but we would have trouble dancing to these songs but we aren’t really into the scene yet so maybe eventually we’ll find our rhythm and try to dance to it but at this point we were completely lost on how to dance to it. But that doesn’t mean people cant dance to it. To Our Surprise Werd actually brings on Go-Go Dancers to the stage.

Anyway, the Go Go Dancers actually could dance to the beat and the heavy bass (something we can’t do at the moment). On top of that a number of attendees to Upgrade also could move to the beats. So we can say the music is tough to dance too but not impossible.

If I could compare the bass in anyway to what I’ve experienced growing up it would be living on the east coast back in the 90′s when having the biggest booming bass in your car or truck was a huge status symbol for you. Especially in the dirty south, the louder the bass the more money you put in and the more car alarms would go off as you’re driving by a parking lot. That’s how loud this bass was at Upgrade. The bass is so intense that the normal person needs to have a break from that intense feeling and that’s where stepping out to the smoking area plays a big role at this event. Its just outside, but the building itself creates a shield from the bass and you can actually carry on a normal conversation. So we observed every person at the event go watch the performances for about 15-20 minutes and then go outside to either smoke or get away from the sound for about 30-40 minutes and they would repeat this all night. During the time in the smoking area, people are drinking, smoking, and most importantly talking. So for as loud as the music is at Upgrade, the success of the event actually occurs somewhat away from the event. Humans are social creatures by nature and this area creates a place where people sort of socialize and everyone at the event was extremely friendly. We lost count of how many people came up to us and just started a conversation with us. Unlike most hip hop shows where you try not to bump into anyone, here you sit down in a chair and next thing you know someone comes up and just starts a conversation.

So overall, Upgrade was actually a very enjoyable event, everyone was super friendly and the music is intense but it doesn’t all sound the same like we thought before we showed up to the event. Werd is a good dude and big into the Heavy Bass/Drum/Dubstep scene here in Orange County, and because the event was fun we will be covering other Upgrade events for Werd in the very near future.

So the next time you hear about an Upgrade event don’t be afraid to check it out. We were welcomed into the group with open arms.
